An honorary doctorate is one of the most prestigious distinctions awarded by higher education institutions in France. Created in 1918, honorary doctorates are a means of paying tribute to foreign academics for their eminent services to science, literature and the arts, to France or to the further education institution awarding the title. At the UPVD, honorary doctorates are awarded based on a recommendation from the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs by the president of the University of Perpignan.

Each of the honorary doctorate award ceremonies are opportunities for the University of Perpignan to pay homage to internationally renowned figures from the world of further education and research. The UPVD has already awarded seven such degrees to eminent academics in recognition of their contributions to the University’s scientific excellence and its international influence.
